What Is It Used For ?

The generic nature of the processing system enables it to be used in many application areas, yielding three-dimensional spatial coverage and temporal frequency coverage from zero frequency up to the maximum frequency of interest. The range of applications and the benefits it will bring are of huge importance -- from satellite communications, where the short-term replacement or repair of faulty components is impossible to achieve, to undersea direction finding, where time-varying sensor positions and unreliable sensor performance in the hostile environment conspire to degrade the overall system performance. Its application in mobile communications will not only give the obvious benefit of greatly increased system capacity, it will also help to eliminate the potential health risks that are currently causing concern.

Used in mobile telephony applications, the system will allow base stations to calculate the direction of mobile telephones. Given bearing information, the base stations can operate using lower power levels for radio transmissions. This benefits the telephone operator (as the base stations have greater coverage) and the users because less power is required at the handset.
